Can you make your own potions?

You will need:

A clean jar, clear vinegar, food dye, glitter, washing-up liquid and bicarbonate of soda.

What to do:

1. Fill the jar halfway with the clear vinegar. Add several drops of food colouring and sprinkle a little glittler over the top.

2. Add a good squeeze of washing-up liquid and gently stir the mixture.

3. Put the jar in the middle of a large baking tray or in the sink. Add a heaped teaspoon of bicarbonate of soda to the jar and see what happens.

Extension: 

1. Try changing the quantities of the vinegar, food colouring, glitter and bicarbonate of soda. Does it change how much foam you make? What happens to the colour?

2. Write a spell to say when brewing your potion.

How it works:

The foam is caused by a chemical reaction. When the vinegar and bicarbonate of soda mix, they make lots of tiny bubbles of gas. The bubbles churn up the washing-up liquid, making lots of foam.
